Dr. Benjamin Khoo

Dr Khoo completed his undergraduate degree in the engineering program at the National University of Singapore on a scholarship/grant offered by the Singapore government and was concurrently on multiple scholarships in graduate school where he completed his M.S. (software engineering) at Andrews University, MI, and M.S. and Ph.D. (Information Systems) at the University of Maryland. He is a member of two honor societies and was awarded the Phi Kappa Phi Dissertation Research Grant. He has published annually in the major information systems publications. His areas of interests are Information Systems Development (including Web-based Systems), Electronic Commerce, Security, Management Issues in Information Technology, Human Computer Interaction and Pedagogy. He is interested in both basic and applied research to further the effectiveness, usability, and ultimately the utility of information systems; and also the pedagogical issues related to these areas.

Dr Khoo is an experienced academician in the area of Information Systems especially in Systems Analysis and Design, Java Programming, Data Communications, Database Management, Decision Support Systems, and also Managing Corporate IT Strategies with professional experience in the full iterative system development life cycle process (Inception, Elaboration, Construction and Transition). Dr Khoo’s professional experience includes: Operations Chair, Organizing Committee of the Annual Wireless Telecommunications Symposium, mini-track co-chair of the "Processes and Methodologies" mini-track of the Systems Analysis and Design Track for AMCIS, member of the Doctoral Students Affairs Committee of the Decision Science Institute, and reviewer for the Journal of Informatics and Education Research, INSITE Journal, Journal of Information Systems Education, Americas Conference on Information Systems, Wireless Telecommunications Symposium, Decision Science Institute Annual Conference and Information Systems Education Conference.

Prior to becoming an academician, Dr Khoo was a member of the Technical Staff (Software Engineer) of a large telecommunication corporation. He served as charter member of the first satellite-based Internet business application project called Spaceway and is experienced in the full software/system development life cycle. He analyzed and designed systems for the data transmission of the Payload Element Management module including requirements definition, usecase modeling, developing usecase descriptions, sequence diagrams and class diagrams. He implemented and tested the system software and used the IBM Rational Suite of tools for system development and testing. He was awarded an Appreciation Award for assisting the Spaceway Payload Element Management team with the design documentation. Dr Khoo was also previously a Senior Engineer at a major hard disk drive manufacturer where he oversaw multiple product transfers and start-up from the design centers to the production plants, provided engineering support for the overall manufacturing of multiple products, optimization of the manufacturing processes and products, and developed manufacturing information systems. He conducted manufacturing systems analysis and design, and developed, evaluated and installed a manufacturing information system in the production line to monitor production yield and track components. He assisted the company to gain ISO9002 certification, becoming the first plant in the company worldwide to do so and was awarded the Best Performer Award for his efforts.
